Wolf Garden Spiders
Wolf garden spiders are commonly found in
California. They are somewhat large and hairy
garden spiders, up to three - four inches
across. They are a mottled gray-brown color,
which helps them hide in sand, gravel, leaves
and other debris. Female wolf spiders carry
their young on their backs. Except for one
group, wolf spiders do not spin webs. They
tend to burrow into the earth and hide. They
are aggressive, come after their prey and
are fast runners. Because of their large
size and aggressiveness, wolf garden spiders
can easily cause people to panic. Bites from
a wolf garden spider can cause much pain,
redness and swelling. The large jaws and impressive
fangs can cause a rip in the skin as they
bite. Swollen lymph glands can develop. The
skin area at the bite may turn dark blue or
black. Swelling and pain can last up to 10
days.
