Jumping Spider
In dry sunny places such as patios and
window sills, and on the ceilings of homes,
we find the Jumping Spider, which is a shade
of gray or black, mottled with white bands
and dots. They have hairy bodies and have
short, squat legs. These garden spiders
spin silk and are usually responsible for
the cobweb that dangles from a ceiling,
but the purpose of their web is not to capture
their prey. Instead, they seize unwary
insects by jumping on it or leaping into
the air, chasing it. The male courts the
female by putting on an elaborate leaping
and swaying dance.
